Edward Picardi, MD, FACS, DABS, is a seasoned general surgeon with over 30 years of extensive experience in medicine and surgery, having practiced across various states and countries. His areas of expertise include trauma surgery and advanced laparoscopic procedures, complemented by his commitment to volunteer medical missions. Renowned for his dedication to patient care, advocacy for life causes, and service to both local and international underserved populations, Dr. Picardi has built a distinguished reputation.
He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on February 15, 1957. His early fascination with medicine guided him to pursue a degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with honors in 1979. He continued to follow his passion, obtaining his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from Hahnemann University in 1983.
Post-medical school, Dr. Picardi commenced his surgical training at Wright-State University while stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. From 1983 to 1989, he completed his residency, mastering various surgical procedures and techniques. In 1989, he was appointed as a staff surgeon at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, where he served as a Major in the United States Air Force Medical Corps during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
Transitioning to civilian practice in 1992, he established a private practice in Rapid City, South Dakota. Over the following two decades, he emerged as a leading general surgeon in the region, earning the Outstanding Surgeon Award from the South Dakota Chapter of the American College of Surgeons in 2001. He also served as the President of this chapter from 1999 to 2000 and significantly contributed to the development of the statewide trauma system, enhancing emergency care for residents of South Dakota.
In 2018, Dr. Picardi relocated to Steubenville, Ohio, joining Trinity Health Systems, part of the Catholic Health Initiative. As a general and trauma surgeon, he has continued to advance his expertise, particularly in robotic surgery, performing over 250 robotic procedures such as cholecystectomies, hernias, and bowel resections. He also serves as a trauma consultant for the regional EMS, actively contributing to the development of trauma care in the region.
Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Edward Picardi has made notable contributions to medical research, including his work on the effects of streptokinase on experimental mesenteric venous thrombosis and pioneering laparoscopic pericardial windows. He is also a staunch pro-life advocate, having been recognized for his efforts with the Physician of the Year Award by the National Republican Congressional Committee in 2005. Despite facing legal challenges due to his advocacy, he has remained committed to protecting life at all stages.
His dedication also extends to volunteer medical missions, often alongside his wife, where they have contributed to healthcare initiatives in Western Africa.
